![]() ![]() We’ll start with Final Cut Pro 7 & X, but here are a couple quick links to jump down to different sections – Adobe Premiere, Avid Media Composer, DaVinci Resolve. For the purposes of this demo though, I’ll focus on some inexpensive (or free) utilities that can tackle the problem. There are a lot of great programs available that make this process very easy, like Scratch Lab, YoYotta, ColorFront OSD, and many more. We are often asked how to use these LUTs and work with Log in general, so I have put together some methods for using LUTs and other plugins to work with Log footage in different NLEs. Arri has their online LUT Generator, and the Technicolor CineStyle LUTs are available when using the CineStyle profile on the 5D Mark II. You can download the F3 LUTs here and the C300 LUTs here, as many of you have already done. Its worth mentioning that DeVinci Resolve light is free.Working with Log material can be difficult at times, so we have put out a couple of different LUTs for use when using the Sony F3′s S-Log or Canon Log from the Canon C300. Having said all that Premeire is great for color correction but if you need to do some real heavy grading you'll want to look into some plugins or some external software. I tend to leave it at 50, but I know people who like to boost it up so it survives YouTube's intense compression. People tell you not to use sharpening in camera but they usually fail to mention that you'll want to add it in post. Technicolor Cinestyle use with Canon DSLR cameras with Technicolor Cinestyle picture profile installed. The last thing I tend to do is add an Unsharp Mask, helps the image pop. Rec709 use with DSLR or mirrorless cameras that do not offer log format. I like to use something like Film Convert or Colorista to get my footage to the style I'm looking for, you could just as easily use the Fast Color Correct or a TriColor though. The LUT will reduce highlight levels and contrast while bumping up mid tone saturation and warmth to deliver images with a timeless and nostalgic quality. I use this mostly to effect the saturation of the image. This retro-look is inspired by the classic Technicolor film process, known for it's soft, vibrant tones and surreal aesthetic. I'll typically use the other curves in this effect to tint the shadows and the highlights. ![]() I add an RGB curves and create an "S curve" on the master to bring back some contrast in the places I want. When I grade flatter footage, anything from the standard profile to a LOG image, I tend do the following if grading in premiere.
